As part of our topic on toys this week's homework will be to make a peg doll. Poor families in the early 1900's did not have enough money to buy toys so children (including my Nan!) had to make their own toys from what they could find. Girls did not have dolls and boys did not have action figures so they made their own. Here are some pictures for inspiration.
1920's Dolls
These dolls were made when my Nan was little. I am not sure her peg doll would have been as grand as these.
A Victorian Peg Doll
This is a very old peg doll. She has been given wooden arms and legs.
Modern Day Peg Dolls
Using pipe cleaners for arms is a very clever idea. You can use wool for hair or just draw hair on. You can draw clothes on or use fabric, felt or paper. Artificial flower petals are good for making fairy clothes.
